When Cascades decided to upgrade their assisted living wing to a secured memory care unit to accommodate those residents who were in danger of being moved to another facility; they not only helped their existing residents, but the community in general. Few memory care facilities were available in this area of Tucson. This renovation included additional activity areas and opening up a wall for a new TV and game room that was immediately off the existing dining room. This new living room added much needed natural light as well as a new toilet room that can be accessed from either side of the hallway. Making a dedicated “living room” right off the dining area was a way to help orient residents to the center of the memory care unit. The other activity areas are also within a short distance from the nurses station. Meals are served in the center dining area which is available for residents to use when meals are not being served. A secured outdoor area has covered benches and a short walking path for residents who are able to go outside. Using sliding acrylic doors on some of the activity rooms is helpful for care givers and family members who would like to have private conversations with residents outside of their rooms. An activity station including a flat screen monitor was also installed to encourage residents who are suffering more severe memory loss to engage in activities that will help to stimulate and retain their cognitive abilities.SEE FULL PROJECT DETAILS.
